Tom Salek here, Facets editor and in-house movie buff. If you took a break from the Internet yesterday, you missed the release of our April/May issue. In it you’ll find some great articles, including my very own about why classic film screenings at revival movie houses give new life to old movies. You’ll also read about the special screening I went to recently of Hitchcock’s 1963 classic, The Birds, at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre. What you won’t find in the article is additional insight from the star of the film, Tippi Hedren, who spoke with me before the screening.
Hedren revealed she was subjected to horrific filming conditions while working on the movie, including having animal trainers throw birds at her to create the visuals for the brutal bird attacks. Even more troubling, Hedren outlined the sexual harassment she endured from director Alfred Hitchcock. After refusing his advances, Hedren said “Hitch” told her he’d ruin her career. Looking back on it now, she said she no longer has any animosity toward him. Instead, she said, “He may have ruined my career, but he didn’t ruin my life.”
After hearing her speak with such honesty and integrity, it was easy to see why, despite having no acting background, she was cast as the leading lady in what would be one of the biggest blockbusters. Read more about The Birds and revival movie theatres in our latest issue.
We can’t keep it a secret any longer: Corri McFadden, of VH1’s House of Consignment, will be gracing the cover of our April/May issue! In our issue out Monday, April 2, you’ll get an in-depth Q&A with Corri and a glimpse into the glamorous eDrop-Off headquarters in Chicago.
DON’T MISS our exclusive premiere party coverage this Wednesday! The Facets team will becoming to you live this Wednesday evening from The James Hotel in Chicago where the city’s most fashionable will gather to toast the show’s premiere episode.
