Happy birthday to Martin Luther King Jr., one of our country’s greatest thinkers and biggest equal rights advocates. As a publication that encourages you to embrace diversity, we hope you’ll take a minute to educate yourself on a few of MLK Jr.’s many significant achievements.
In August 1963, MLK Jr. organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where more than 200,000 participants rallied for an end to racial inequality in America. The march is when MLK delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech and helped push Congress to passing the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.
In 1964, at 35, MLK Jr. was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end segregation. He is currently the second youngest person to receive the award and the youngest male to be awarded this honor.
In 1968, MLK Jr. organized the Poor People’s Campaign to address issues of economic inequality in America.
Besides civil rights, MLK Jr. also focused efforts on the Vietnam War, rallying Americans against the conflict in Southeast Asia.
