Happy Kwanzaa! Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa comes from a Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, which means “first fruits.” The week-long celebration honors African American life, family, community and culture. Each day of the celebration represents seven values of African culture:
Umoja (unity)
Kujichagulia (self-determination)
Ujima (collective work and responsibility)
Ujamaa (cooperation)
Nia (purpose)
Kuumba (creativity)
Imani (faith)
